Regeneration of Lower Lea Valley, London

PROJECT BRIEF

The impoverished and neglected area of Lower Lea Valley is now alive with the construction of a new DLR rail line to connect Olympic Site to Center of London. Hence, the regeneration strategy is based on the potential of this increased connectivity, the area's locational advantage and the water- landscape qualities.

The proposal comprises a network of mixed use interventions inside and on the edge of the industrial sector, intensifying industries into compact space, thereby releasing land that can provide the missing amenities in the area. For this, 5 initial sites have been selected:Bromley-by-Bow station and the new Star Lane station as obvious nodes for locating amenities; a primarily housing development along the river edge to attract people with higher spending capabilities to provide critical mass to the area; and two mixed-use intermediate developments in the interior of this industrial sector that can eventually grow into an urban connector. The proposal also suggests redeveloping the unique gasworks site into a city scale venue, giving a better identity to the valley. Gradually, the benefits of these interventions will establish an improved balance of programs, linking fragmentary pieces of the valley and forming a desirable urban quarter.
